Dust Devil Colorado burn
Watch as a Dust Devil HIts a Prescribed Burn in Colorado

Prescribed fires are a technique used by a number of fire departments across the United States. But what happens when a dust devil involves itself in the burn?

Firefighters near Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Arsenal found out back in March when a dust devil kicked up dozens of tumbleweeds and the flames from the controlled burn.

According to News 9 in Colorado:

The unexpected dust devil ended up burning an extra acre of land but no property was damaged and no one was injured.

“It was definitely interesting to see. I’m a fire buff as well as a weather buff and here I had a weather event and a fire event coming together and it was just really amazing to watch,” South Metro Fire & Rescue Thomas Rogers told News 9 in Colorado. “There’s nothing you can do except get out of the way and wait for it to calm down.”
