If you’re planning on visiting a New York state park anytime soon, you now have the technology to guarantee you’ll never get lost. Avenza Systems Inc. — a Canadian company which specializes in developing computer and mobile software products and royalty-free map data — has teamed with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation to give its 60 million annual state park visitors free mobile access to over 50 state park trail maps featuring more than 1,500 miles of trails. The digital PDF maps are available to download free at http://www.pdf-maps.com/get-maps.
According to the press release, park visitors with GPS-enabled devices can now locate themselves on New York State Park maps as they walk the trails. These maps are ideal for those hiking in remote parks, where wireless service can sometimes be sparse and streaming maps aren’t detailed enough to be relied upon. The map comes fully loaded with features such as such as showing location, dropping waypoints/pinpoints on points-of-interest, attaching images and notes, and tracking routes, distance and elevation – all while offline.
“While digital maps in general are pervasive, functional map data for off-line navigating through non-urban environments is limited — especially for outdoor enthusiasts visiting State Parks, so we’re excited to feature interactive digital maps that are both resourceful and simple to use especially for those new to the area,” said Ted Florence, president of Avenza Systems, Inc. “Avenza’s PDF Maps app provides constant access to geographic locations such as ranger stations, trail heads or picnic areas without the risk of losing reception due to cell tower proximity – making it the ultimate outdoor accessory for novice or expert hikers trekking through various trails that the State Park has to offer.”
Park visitors can download Avenza’s PDF Maps app to their Apple iOS and Android devices and simply search for the New York state park map they want to use.
